Chinese route upgrade forces Jitong line to close

This pair of Chinese QJ 2-10-2-'s storm up the western approach to Shandiang Summit in January 2005

Just 2 weeks ago GW Travel, operators of the famous "Jingpeng Orient Express", confirmed that the famous Jitong line is expected to close completely at the end of 2012. This is due to the building of a new line avoiding the Jingpeng Pass, and as no money can be found to keep the line running, the Chinese Authorities have no option but to close the line completely.

To pay tribute to this wonderful line, GW Travel have partnered up with "Steam Railway Magazine" to offer one last tour encompassing this spectacular railway. The 2012 "Jingpeng Orient Express" takes place over the final weekend of January. You can join the fabulous GW Travel Rolling Hotel or have some fun with the Steam Railway readers as they spend the day walking up and down the line recording the very last QJ hauled trains before the famous line closes for the forseable future. Details of this tour will appear later in January.

Of course it may re-open, but there are no plans for this at present.

We are all sorry for the passing of this legendary steam railway.

Best Regards,
Steve & Chris Nelson

N2 No.1744 makes another apperance on the line and is also pencilled in to be paired with the teak set. L.M.S. "Ivatt" No.43106 has returned from the North Norfolk Railway and will participate in the 2012 event.

The Gala is running in partnership with Steam Railway Magazine. Definately something to look forward to.

All of this is a long way from the grey primer carried back in 2008
The A1 steam locomotive Trust has confirmed the first 3 preserved railway visits for 2012. "Tornado" still has more mainline work to do before her year is over. in 2012, the lco will be very busy from word go. Mainline runs have already been confirmed and 3 preserved railway visits have been planned.

First, The locomotive is to visit the Nene Valley Railway near Peterbourugh in Camebridgeshire for its Spring Steam Gala over the weekend of the 6th/9th April 2012. The loco is due to arrive under its own power, only the second time in a row that this has happened for the NVR.

The second visit is to the Llangollen Railway in North Wales for the Steel Steam and Stars 3 event. The loco will be operating alongside other guests such as No.70000 "Britannia", N2 No.1744 and LNWR Super D No.49395. This is sure to be a contender for "Gala of the Year 2012".

The last visit will be to Barrow Hill Roundhouse, where it will be starring in the newly arranged A1, A2, A3 A4 line-up, which was postponed earlier this year due to the unavailability of No.4472 "Flying Scotsman". There is also speculation that she will make a visit to the Ribble Steam Railway in Lancashire. However, this has to be confirmed.

60007 will not steam again until 2012, the NYMR has confirmed

A4 No.60007 "Sir Nigel Gresley standing outside Grosmont shed

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway has confirmed that due to various mechanical problems, the resident A4 Pacific No.60007 "Sir Nigel Gresley" is not likley to return to steam again until the Spring of 2012. The locomotive was rostered to make an apperance at the Mid Hants Autumn Steam Gala this weekend, however that is no longer possible. A4 No. 4492 "Dominion of New Zealand" AKA 60019 "Bittern" is billed to take the place of "Gresley".

The A4 was also scheduled to take part in a run to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of the A4's being constructed. However, Marcus Robertson has put this on hold, with a view to making it a run to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II next year. All of its Christmas mainline runs have been cancelled as a result of these problems. They are now rostered for other locos, 60019 being the new loco.

We are in contact with the NYMR and hope to see "Sir Nigel" back on the rails in 2012.

Good Luck and Haste ye back!

Removal of No.4492 "Dominion of New Zealand" from NYMR stuns Rail Enthusiasts

A4 No.4492 "Dominion of New Zealand" powers up hill through Helpston on the outskirts of Peterbourugh

The performance gets even more volcanic in this classic A4 territory

Breasting the summit, "Dominion" approaches Peterbourugh

Unfortunately, New Romney Productions has learned that No.4492 "Dominion of New Zealand" never made it to the NYMR on Thursday due to a mechanical problem. The NYMR is very sorry for the dissapointment this may cause, as we ourselves were looking forward to the sight of a blue streamlined A4 on a set of Teak coaches. However, it is due to make its scheduled appearance at the Mid Hants Railway alongside "Tornado" and "Britannia" next weekend.

Watch this space for more information.

Festrail helps out with "Cob 200 Celebrations"

George England 042T "Palmerston" & Penrhyn Quarry Hunslet "Blanche" storm away from Tan Y Bawlch on the FR

Another historic day for Festrail today as it helps out with the "Cob 200 Celebrations" being held in Porthmadog today. George England 042T "Palmerston" has been running vintage shuttle trains between Porthmadog and Minfordd and hopefully, these will have attracted some publicity by the end of the weekend.

Helping to operate the service trains into Porthmadog were Double Fairlie's "David Lloyd George" and "Merddin Emrys", supported by "Blanche" and 2 Garretts, 87 & 143. This has been another succesful event for the Festrail team with their traffic figures going up 62 0/0 this year.

Please note that "Palmerston" will be in operation again during the "Vintage Weekend" on the 15th/16th October 2011.

Rekindle memories of the "Atlantic Coast Express" on Steam Dreams 3 day tour

For those of you who have fond memories of the "Atlantic Coast Express" storming through to the South West of England, you can rekindle those memories on a 3 day tour organised by Steam Dreams.

Three of the most famous Southern Railway steam locomotives have been brought together to haul the 14 coach load to the West Country once again. These are, Unrebuilt Battle of Britain Pacific No.34067 "Tangmere", Rebuilt West Country No.34046 "Braunton" and SR "King Arthur" No.30777 "Sir Lamiel".

This recreation of the Southern Railway's most famous train will start at London Waterloo, where 30777 will be waiting to head the train as far as Westbury. 34046 & 34067 will then take over for a Double Headed ascent of the Devon Banks from Westbury to Newquay.

Day 2, and a chance to sample some Cornish steam on the Bodmin & Wenford Railway.

The third and final day, and the train will begin the journey back to London Waterloo. 34046 & 34067 will Double Head the train back over the Devon Banks from Par to Exeter, 34046 then runs solo from Exeter to Okehampton and then 34067 then takes over for the last leg back into London.

It's quite an ambitious schedule, but I am sure it will bring back memories.

We look forward to it.

"Tangmere" is normally seen running in Southern England, it occasionaly runsin Northern England, it has also worked over the S&C but it has never touched Scotland. Thanks to "Heritage Railway Magazine" for issuing this information. We will keep you posted on more details for the next "Cathedrals" as they come through.

Crowds turn out for "Two Working Kings Event"

The crowds came out today to see the two "King" class locomotives meet for the first time in 49 years. It was certainly a spectacular event, apart from the small problem that No.6023 "King Edward II" had this morning.

For the first part of the morning, No.6024 "King Edward I", visiting Didcot between Mainline Engagements, ran single headed on the main demonstration line and I managed to get several good shots. These were achieved by lifting the camera and tripod over the fence. The sound was very loud and ruffled the hairs on the back of my neck today!

At around about 2:00-2:30, 6023 was finally in action. She was lined up with No.6024 for half an hour and at 3:00, she was turned on the turntable. Finally, at 3:30, much later than planned, they were Double Headed for the rest of the day. There were cameras everywhere at this point in the proceedings.

On several of the shots, both "Kings" opened their regulators for the cameras, resulting in a sound that had to be heard to be believed. It was around 25 degrees celsius today, so by the time I finished gathering all of the material, which took me nearly 4 hours, possibly more, I was very hot indeed.

This material will go into "New Romney Productions Steam Magazine, Issue 1", which covers the most notable events from January to April 2011, including the launch of No.6023 "King Edward II" and "The Two Working Kings Event", filmed at the railway centre today. This material will be a special supplement to the programme.

Regards,
Chris Neson,
2nd Cameraman

NB No.6024 will not be running tomorrow as running repairs need to be carried out. It is hoped that she will be out again during the "Steam Railmotor Weekend" on 28th May, before she makes her debut apperance on the 2011 season of "Torbay Express" trains.

Thursday 21 April 2011

NRP filming at "Two Working Kings Event" on Saturday 23rd April

The two surviving "King" class locomotives No.6023 "King Edward II" and 6024 "King Edward I" will be meeting for the first time in 49 years at Didcot Railway Centre this coming Saturday, 23rd April. I have had the camera charged up and ready, so it's all in hand.

I will be filming material there for the first edition of our "New Romney Productions Steam Magazine series", which covers sme of the most notable events in the period from January to April 2011, culmintating with extensive footage celebrating the return of "King Edward II." There will be plenty of footage of the "King" class locos Double Heading.

This material will go into the DVD as a special supplement which includes:
Footage of 6023 on Sunday 2nd April after its public launch
Extensive coverage of "The Two Working Kings" Event

The first issue is expected to be released in early May 2011. The full programme includes:
New Year Gala at the Swanley New Barn Railway
"Birch Grove" at the Bluebell Railway in Late January
The West Somerset Railway Spring Steam Gala, celebrating its 35th Anniversary
Update from the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway
Plus the special supplement celebrating the return to steam of "King Edward II"

There'll be plenty more to come from Didcot in September 2011, when the Great Western Railway Preservation Society will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary with a special Gala event. Our production, "GWS 50" will cover the events there.

So as you can see, there's plenty of Great Western action to come from New Romney Productions.

NRP Steam: "King Edward II Returns"

In the sunset at Didcot, 6023 has a blowdown after her final test run.

A special edition of NRP Steam is in production covering the return to steam of 6023 "King Edward II". The programme will cease filming on April 23rd. In this programme we feature round the clock coverage of 6023 working on the Demonstration Line on Sunday 3rd April. For one day only on Saturday 23rd April, 6024 "King Edward I" will join forces with 6023 for a specially arranged Enthusiasts Gala event. We will be returning to cover this historic event. The really good part is that several Double Headed runs have been organised to allow us to see the sight of the two king class locomotives working together. This sight has not been seen for over 49 years! More details will be posted as we get them.

West Somerset Gala filming completed

L.M.S. Class Five No. 45231 "The Sherwood Forester" and S.R Wes Country No.34046 "Braunton" pair up during the 2009 Spring Gala at the West Somerset Railway.

The filming for the West Somerset Railway Gala DVD has been completed. We are very pleased with ourselves as we have come away with well over an hour of footage. Here's a brief overview of our visit to this spectacular event.

We arrived at Bishops Lydeard just after 9:00 in the morning and GWR Large Prarie No.4160 was in the station preparing empty stock for the first train of the day to Minehead. GWR Pannier No.6430 was visiting from the Llangollen Railway in North Wales and spent the Gala working Auto Trains between Bishops Lydeard and Norton Fitzwarren. Two shots were captured on the Saturday and Sunday.

There's also some pretty noisy and atmospheric steam action from No.4160, which we captured preparing for the first train to Minehead and then making some very loud and noisy departures.

We then witnessed the arrival of No.70000 "Britannia" in her brand new livery and then took a ride to Minehead behind GWR Churchwood 2-8-0- No.2807, visiting from the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway. There is no footage of "Sir Lamiel" or the ride behind 2807 due to filming difficulties.

At Minehead, several shots were taken, but perhaps our highlight wat the paring of "Britannia" and GWR King No.6024 "King Edward I". We rode behind them back to Lydeard and then filming finished for the day.

Today, several shots were taken of No's 6430,88,2807 and 70000.

All in all a very succesful trip.

Don't forget we are on location at Didcot for the launch of No.6023 "King Edward II" next weekend.
